The Greater Flamingo frequents large shallow inland lakes with saline or very alkaline waters, salt lagoons and estuaries. In West Africa, it is found on sandbanks and mudflats.
This species breeds on mudflats, sandbanks, open beaches, sandy or rocky islands in large water bodies, sometimes also on sandy islands in tidal areas. This is the case in Mauritania.
It rarely frequents fresh waters, except for drinking and bathing.
